RIP - Routing Information Protocol

Has two versions: RIPv1 and RIPv2.

RIP is used to exchange routing information with other routers. A router uses RIP to learn new routes and to dynamically update routes to other networks. On power-up, the router sends out RIP requests asking for any routes to networks that other routers may know about. This information is stored in the router's internal routing table, can be continually updated as new routes become available or old ones are timed out. Also, the router will lose all of it's stored tables when it is turned off.

RIP is defined in RFC1058: Routing Information Protocol.
