The connection status mechanism is termed the Link Management Interface (LMI) specification. There are three versions of the LMI specification:

ANSI Annex D T1.617
ITU Q.933 Annex A (referenced in FRF.1.1)
Note that the term "LMI" was used originally for the FRF.1 specification; over time it has become a generic term to refer to any of the above protocols.
Each management protocol is slightly different from one another. Almost all equipment supports LMI and Annex D, while Annex A is not quite as popular. To ensure interoperability, the same management protocol must be at each end of the Frame Relay link.
